ASPECTS OF THE MARINE SPATIAL PLANNING PROCESS

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH IN THE MARITIME SECTOR

One of the most critical parameters in the MSP process is identifying the distribution of maritime sectors and how they utilize maritime areas. Activities such as pilotage, maritime transportation, shipping operations, aquaculture, renewable energy, mineral extraction, and marine tourism play a significant role in shaping the use of maritime areas. The distribution of these activities serves as a fundamental dataset for managing conflicts and implementing solutions for multi-use and shared-use scenarios.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure holds various responsibilities concerning maritime activities in national and international waters. These include facilitating ship-to-ship communication, monitoring, and regulating maritime traffic from the shore. Additionally, the Ministry determines the administrative jurisdiction of port authorities and oversees activities within these areas. Furthermore, the Ministry is responsible for managing Automatic Identification System (AIS) data in Türkiye. AIS collects essential navigational information, such as vessel positions, routes, and other maritime-related details. This data plays a crucial role in ensuring maritime safety and traffic management. Within the MSP framework, AIS data is a key resource for analyzing vessel traffic patterns in maritime areas.

In Türkiye, the Turkish Chamber of Shipping (IMEAK DTO) is tasked with strategic planning for the maritime sector and conducting the necessary research and analyses in line with these plans. As an institution that should be integrated into the MSP process, it possesses comprehensive data on the economic value and employment inventory of the Turkish maritime sector. Within this scope, IMEAK DTO publishes reports containing statistical data on the sector’s economic scale, employment contributions, and various economic indicators related to maritime trade. These reports provide valuable insights into the current state and trends of the industry.

The detailed information regarding the studies and projects conducted on sustainable development and growth in the maritime sectors should be provided by the relevant Ministries and institutions.
